New treatment for stroke patients

Transcript

There’s been a medical breakthrough which may improve treatment for stroke patients.

La Trobe University’s Professor Chris Sobey says there’s a strong possibility patients will able to access this new treatment in the near future.

Vicky has the details.

There’s been a discovery discarded fluids sacs from newborn babies is the key to swift recovery from stroke.

The cells from the sacs travels to the head after the injection and focus on reducing potential inflammation in the brain.

“We’ve found that injections of these amnion epithelial cells into the blood results in the cells traveling to the brain. They hone in on sites of injury and they reduce the amount of inflammation and they promote recovery.”

Stroke is the one of the leading cause of disabilities in Australia and can be fatal.
